Its fairly common I think, Minion Masters can use a pet as an "extra" corpse here and there, Ursans use it for extra damage, Casters use it to help with Melee Damage, its a rather good use if you use no other secondary skills that prevent going Ranger and you can risk losing a skill for a pet.

Dead pets' corpses are not exploitable. It takes two slots for Charm Animal and Comfort Animal unless someone in your party has Revive Animal.
I wouldn't recommend it, personally. They deal pitiful damage unless you invest significant amount of attribute points in your Beast Mastery.

Unless you can invest well in it (probably 12 at the least), it'll be inferior to running something else. It'll be your primary line, like Swordsmanship/Axe/Hammer Mastery is to Wars, like Dagger Mastery is to Assassins, etc. If you're looking to just throw 8 points in it and expect it to be effective, you'll be disappointed.

If you ursan, then you can put a large amount of points into it without affecting damage output (don't flame please), but i like taking a pet for fun through PvE as long as the area isnt too challenging.

For kicks and giggles I do.
When I got my rainbow phoenix on my warrior, I did some vanquishes with a build similar to this to level her up:
[rage of the ntouka][barbarous slice][body blow][final thrust][lions comfort][comfort animal][charm animal]
I still haven't decided if I want to get my paragon a pet-if I do it'd prolly be along the lines of a [heal as one] type build.

Like some people said, ursans can take them with high pet mastery, cause the damage source dousn't comes from the attributes, but from the norn rank.
Another point is that hero/hench healers will heal your pet, they are using energy for a pet which can't deal very much damage. Better is if they use it for the party which can do much more then a pet can do. That's why i don't use pets, but when the area is quite easy, you can take it for some fun

Pets are fun to have around, but only really useful if you fully invest in being a beastmaster.
Aside from the minimal damage coming from a pet with 0-3 points in beast mastry, the pet tends to die (blacking out your skills for 8 sec) at the worst possible times.
They were useful in Barrage/pet teams when the corpses were exploitable, but that's gone now.
I don't even usually take a pet on an Ursan, since I'd rather pump 12 points into Inspiration and carry a Mantra.

Pets on a secondary Ranger are never worth it IMO...they're not worth it on primary Rangers most of the time (except the Thumper and Spearchucker) for crying out loud.

I say go ahead and get one, you'll have fun with it until you start to lose missions, then you'll put it away and only take it out for funsies. Thats how I did on my ranger.

About; Pets
1. Do experience scrolls apply to Pets?
2. Are Dire pets really still smaller than Elder/Hearty pets,...?

even for PvP, Hearty is still pretty good. Players don't ignore pets like they used to, pets are really something to be afraid of if you have a solid build. I'd much rather have the +120HP over Dire and do a little bit less damage.

it's really how you use them.
same with flesh golem. everyone seems to hate them, for some reason. i have a 3 hero build that uses flesh golems, polar bears and deathly swarm, and they can handle sorrow's without my help. three skills that most people will agree are terrible. they can handle hard mode sorrow's furnace with my help. this same team can also beat warband of brothers, thirsty river and UW.
i chose necro as the primary since soul reaping keeps the tanks virtually invincible. that is, it takes a little while to kill the golems, which get targeted. after the golems die, enemies usually target the bears next (important since pets are usually not targeted otherwise). while they switch to bears, the golems have come back. after bears, to golems. . . then bears. . . then gol. deathly swarm requires no extra attribute (13 death, 11 reap, 8 beast). it can apply enough pressure with golems that you don't have to prioritize healers. if you want the build, let me know. most people have better builds, though.
